About this camp

The Welch Summer Scholar Program (WSSP) is a five-week immersive scientific research experience for high-achieving Texas high school students. Participants engage in one-on-one mentoring and first-hand research training with faculty and graduate students at one of six participating Texas universities: The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Texas at Arlington, The University of Texas at Dallas, The University of Houston, Texas A&M University, and Texas Tech University. The program's primary goal is to expose students to rigorous scientific research and provide a glimpse into college campus life. Students conduct real-life research projects using state-of-the-art equipment and modern technology, culminating in a research paper, presentation, and/or poster session. Through assignments, guest speaker series, facility tours, and presentations of personal research findings, students gain a deeper understanding of chemical principles and research methodologies. Many alumni pursue undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in STEM fields.

What a typical day looks like

Students spend the majority of each day performing research activities in their assigned lab under the supervision of an advanced graduate student or post-doctoral associate, in addition to interacting with a faculty mentor.

Best suited for
