The NASA & UT Austin SEES High School Summer Intern Program is a nationally competitive hybrid internship that provides high school students with exposure to Earth and space research. Interns collaborate with NASA, academic, and industry experts, utilizing mission data across various disciplines such as aerospace, astronomy, planetary science, remote sensing, microgravity research, and space geodetic techniques. The program focuses on authentic NASA mission-based research, where students analyze satellite data, develop skills in data analysis, engineering design, and scientific modeling. Projects are mission-based and aligned with national aerospace priorities, offering students the opportunity to build technical expertise. The internship culminates in a Virtual SEES Science Symposium where all interns present their research findings to NASA experts, scientists, families, and invited guests.
Activities include hands-on research projects, field investigations, lectures from STEM professionals, and networking opportunities. Students gain experience in interpreting NASA satellite data, working with geospatial tools like ArcGIS, Google Earth Engine, and NASA Giovanni, and contributing to ongoing research on climate, land use, water systems, and natural hazards. Some projects also involve designing and adapting lunar missions or working with astronaut photography to observe Earth changes over time. The program aims to strengthen systems design thinking, collaboration, and communication skills, preparing students for various STEM career pathways.
On-site interns engage in daytime research, evening sessions, and field investigations, with teachers and graduate students serving as chaperones.
The ideal student is a current high school sophomore or junior (rising junior or senior) who is a U.S. citizen, at least 16 years old by July 5, 2026, and has a strong interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
